When I read a tech book I typically don't read the intros with history and stuff, but I'm really glad I read this one. The really interesting thing to me was that the authors identified three periods of interest and research, and pointing out things like the XOR limitation as a reason for one of the periods to end.
I also wasn't at all familiar with the cybernetics movement before and was reading a little more about it. Generally speaking it's the study of self-governance. Just that definition alone really clarifies for me how researchers were thinking compared to later when machine learning algorithms split into supervised and unsupervised categories.
